Fan speed bios

CPU Min.FAN. Speed

Speed? Speed.

CPU Min.FAN. Speed 37.5%:

How to increase CPU fan speed via software & BIOS

  • Resource-consuming software (mainly games) can increase your CPU’s temperature and turn your PC’s housing unit in a cooking stove.
  • Luckily for you, there’s a bunch of software solutions that can help you change the speed of your fan without significant efforts.
  • If you’re a bit skeptical, you can also use a fan speed controller if you want more control over your PC’s fans.

The collaboration of software and hardware is what makes your system working as intended.

Let’s take the CPU as an example—an essential part of a PC configuration, small but remarkably sturdy. However, if exposed to abnormal temperatures for an extended period (gamers, we’re looking at you), the CPU might fail.

Now, there are various ways to avoid that (extra cooling fans is probably the best of those), and today we’ll show you one that’s rather important – how to increase the speed of the CPU fan.

This is the first line of defense, and even though your motherboard controls the CPU fan’s speed, sometimes it’s best to tend to that on your own. If you’re not accustomed to changing the CPU fan’s speed, make sure to check the steps we provided below.

How can I control my CPU fan speed in Windows 10?

1. SpeedFan – the best third-party solution for fan control

Most of the time, the CPU fan speed is controlled by built-in resources. However, if you want to take matters into your own hands, there’s nothing as suitable as SpeedFan.

There are some conditions you’ll need to fulfill in order to use it and configuring it isn’t exactly a walk in the park, but once you get the hold of it, SpeedFan will become an indispensable part of your everyday workflow.

The conditions we mentioned are considering motherboard support for fan control. However, that’s in question only if you decide to add extra cooling fans.

In regards to CPU and GPU fans, you should be able to control them without any problems. Laptops are an exception, and SpeedFan won’t be of any use with portable computers, except for monitoring.

Here’s how to regulate the fan speed on your PC with SpeedFan:

  1. DownloadSpeedFan for free
  2. You should see the CPU and GPU fans in the left panel
  3. There, you can choose the percentage of fan speed (100% is full throttle). On the right side, you should see the current temperatures of CPU cores individually
  4. Regulate speed as you like manually, or you can automatize SpeedFan to increase the RPM (revolutions per minute) once the temperatures surpass the acceptable values

Your CPU speed should never cross 70 degrees Celsius, and around 60 degrees is an acceptable limit for an extended period of time.

This means that you’ll be safest at around 50 degrees, where the risk of critical damage due to overheating is quite low.

Most users don’t know what to do when their laptop is overheating. Check out this amazing guide and always be a step ahead.

2. BIOS settings – built-in way to control CPU fan speed

Even though SpeedFan is a slick tool, you don’t need to orchestrate the speed of a CPU fan from the Windows interface. That can be done through the BIOS settings, as well. At least, most of the time.

Even though different motherboard manufacturers call it differently, there’s always a fan setting hidden within the BIOS.

With some of those, you can regulate the speed, while others need to be disabled in order to make your CPU fan run with maximum effort. Here’s how to access BIOS in Windows 10 and tweak fan-related settings on your own:

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings
  2. Open Update & security
  3. From the left pane, select Recovery
  4. Under the Advanced Startup, click Restart Now
  5. Click Troubleshoot
  6. Select Advanced options
  7. Choose UEFI Firmware settings
  8. Click Restart
  9. Your PC should boot in BIOS/UEFI settings
  10. Once there, you should have an easy time finding the fan configuration settings

If you’re having trouble opening the Setting app, take a look at this article to solve the issue. Also, if your CPU fan is making noise, take a look at this useful guide.

Need additional info on how to access BIOS? Let us make things easier for you with the help of this dedicated guide!

As we already stated, some settings allow you to change the RPM while others are made to make fans silent. For the latter one, we advise you do disable it if you’re having overheating issues.

That way, your CPU cooling fan will always run at full speed and thus make your PC a bit louder but much less prone to overheating.

With that, we can conclude. There’s so much more to say about cooling systems in PC’s, but we tried to keep it concise and concentrate on the CPU fan.

In case you have questions or suggestions regarding the CPU fan control, feel free to toss them at us in the comments section below.

What are the best programs for changing fan speed?

If you’re looking for efficient programs that can help you tweak your PC’s fans intuitively, you can check our top 5 list right here.

Can I use hardware controllers to change my PC’s fan speed?

Yes, in addition to software solutions, there are also hardware components that you can use to modify your PC fans’ speed. Check out or recommendations here.

What temperature should my CPU be at ideally?

This answer greatly depends on the rest of your PC’s configuration, but generally speaking, temperatures of 40 – 65° C are most effective for most units.

The only bug with AI Suite was the fact that we were stuck using outdated Intel MEI drivers which did not work with the AI Suite.

There is no real reason to uninstall AI Suite at all because it works perfectly. In fact the fan control in AI Suite can’t be matched by the bios fan control, not even close IMO.

I have to completely disagree with you.
First order of business support software should be written around the hardware and drivers, not the other way.
Secondly Just what do you think AI suite is? Its just another interface that reads and writes to the BIOS via MOBO connect.

The fan control of AI suite is the least of the worries. Thats easy enough to take care of. Its the other options that are the problem. Personally I have an issue with anything that makes writes to the BIOS rom while the machine is posted to OS and running.

Ive tried AI suite for fan control and it was mediocre at best. You could get it do run curves then crap yourself when out of nowhere all your fans go to 100% for no reason at all, curves are still present, then shut down and restart AI suite and its back to normal again.

This is the least of my worries with AI suite. Its the other more involved things like CPU settings that are a huge problem and bricked a M8E. I gave it another try on a new build and kept getting BSODs and lock up caused 100% but one of the components of the installation and had precisely nothing to do with MEI.

There are far better ways to control fans, pumps etc. Personally I went with aquaero and will never look back. Thats not the only choice though. Lots of controllers out there that are actually reliable, wont brick your machine, and wont flake out on you.

Given the choice of AI Suite or BIOS, use the BIOS as its whats doing it anyhow. All AI suite is doing is using a software driven interface to modify the exact same parameters in the exact same registers in the BIOS rom.

On my IX HERO I was using until recently the fan management through bios though little versatile. After trying several software like AiSuite, Speedfan, etc. I finally found something reliable. Argus Monitor. You can set the courve of each fan connectors, even with combined sources, CPU / GPU, CPU / Socket, thermal sensor . Really well done.

Given the choice of AI Suite or BIOS, use the BIOS as its whats doing it anyhow. All AI suite is doing is using a software driven interface to modify the exact same parameters in the exact same registers in the BIOS rom.

The only issue I’ve ever had in the 3 years I’ve used AI Suite was because of the outdated MEI drivers that Asus mistakenly posted on their support site for my board.

Those outdated MEI’s caused crashes for me and many others but it would never crash while under load, only during long periods of non use with the usual Dipawaymode showing as the culprit. Completely fixed by updating the MEI drivers and not a single crash since.

Besides that one issue the fan control works perfectly for me, no strange fan spin ups, goes right back to quiet idle after the load is removed. Solid 4.6GHz OC on my 4790K was tested with real bench proved to be solid. Never needed to mess with any other settings. All with a single push of a button.

So you see for some it works perfectly fine while others might not have the same experience. Probably the level of overclocking as something to do with it.

Pretty difficult to make iron clad comments about how horrible it is when many others like me for instance see no such problems.
